Tell California Officials: No Drilling Where We're Living!

Right now, more than 2 Million Californians are living and breathing the toxic health impacts of oil and gas drilling sites in their neighborhoods. An end to chronic asthma and cancer in our neighborhoods is in sight. Just last month, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a draft regulation to stop new drilling within 3,200 feet of homes, hospitals, schools, and other sensitive receptors. 

SBCAN has been asked to invite interested parties to participate in Local Development under Climate Change: Evaluating Trade-offs Between Carbon Emissions, Water Sustainability, and Affordable Housing for Communities in the Central Coast.   

The focus of this meeting is a scenario analysis to understand tradeoffs between important goals for water supplies, land use, including housing, and climate change.

Researchers from UC Santa Cruz are looking for input from San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Stakeholders

Students from UCSB Environmental Affairs Board and Sunrise Movement Santa Barbara are co-sponsoring a Halloween-themed climate rally and march on Friday, October 22 along with the Society of Fearless Grandmothers-SB, Santa Barbara County Action Network (SBCAN), 350 SB and Women’s March SB. Global warming threatens the future of young people all over the world. UCSB students say, “Halloween should be scary, not our future,” so they are rising up to send the message to elected officials and adults in power: take action NOW to meet the climate emergency. They have a particular message for Governor Newsom: STOP approving new fossil fuel projects. And for California electeds: STOP taking fossil fuel donations! and No Climate-No Deal!

WHAT: Rally and March with Elders and Youth in support of the Fridays for Future Global Climate Strike

WHEN: Friday, September 24, Rally at 4:30 PM followed by March

WHERE: Rally at County Administration Building, 105 E. Anapamu, followed by march onto State Street ending at De La Guerra Plaza.

Our South County Roundtable is cancelled for this month. 

Please save the date for a special Roundtable meeting next month, on September 17th at noon via zoom. We will be meeting with State Assembly Member Steve Bennett to hear his thoughts on housing, particularly around SB 9 and 10 and Community Land Trusts, as well as his bill AB 896 that would remove bankruptcy loopholes for oil and gas companies that allow them to improperly abandon their idle wells. There will be plenty of time for any other questions you may have for him. Hope to see you there!

Below is the agenda for our North County Roundtable on Thursday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. 

We are tentatively planning our South County Roundtable for next Friday, Aug. 20 at noon. We will send more information on that in a few days.

We hope you’ll come to our North County Roundtable this Thursday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m. to hear about relevant issues SBCAN is involved with in the North County.

We will hear from Santa Maria city staff about the Santa Maria General Plan Update, from SBCAN staff about the Santa Maria River Healthy Watershed Project and from UFCW 770 about efforts to direct some of the American Rescue Plan's funds towards essential workers in our county. 

We will also hear an update about the push to change the Santa Maria school board logo and the city logo and we'll give an update on the Neighborhoods project.
