Greetings SB CAN members and friends! Please take a few moments to review the upcoming events and news. And please forward to your friends and others who are interested in creating sustainable communities through sound planning that integrates housing, open space and transportation-our HOT principles.

News in brief:

 1. BOS Hearing on Gaviota Coast project at NAPLES (Santa Barbara Ranch), October 13, Santa Barbara

2. SB CAN Fall Harvest Picnic, October 26, El Capitan Ranch.

Now the details

1. BOS Hearing on NAPLES (Santa Barbara Ranch)

WHAT: Board of Supervisors Hearing on Naples / Naples Coalition Rally

WHEN: Monday, October 13, (Hearing starts at 9 AM / Rally at noon)

WHERE: Santa Barbara County Building, 105 E Anapamu, 4th floor, Santa Barbara

A 72 mansion project has been approved by the County Planning Commission and is now about to receive the final approval by the Board of Supervisors. It is imperative to oppose against this project that will blight the Gaviota Coast. The all day hearing will be held in the Santa Barbara County Building.

At noon the Naples Coalition will hold a public rally in the Courthouse Sunken Garden (during the Supervisor's lunch break) to promote and encourage public participation at the Board hearing across the street. Lunch will be available to Naples Coalition supporters attending the hearing. SB CAN is a member of Naples Coalition.

NOW IS THE TIME to pitch in to Save Naples.

Call or email your Supervisor, or submit a letter to the editor. Attend the noontime rally and show your support forNaples. And if you can take all or part of the day, attend the Board of Supervisors hearing. Just attending makes a statement. Public testimony will probably be right after lunch, and we can submit a speaker's slip for you in the morning if you let us know.

If you have questions please contact SB CAN at Olivia@sbcan.org or 563-0463. You can also visitwww.gaviotaaction.org, sponsored by the Gaviota Coast Conservancy and the Naples Coalition

2. SB CAN Fall Harvest Picnic, October 26, El Capitan Ranch.

2008 Fall Harvest Picnic

Sunday, October 26, 11 AM

El Capitan Ranch, Gaviota Coast

Presented by

Santa Barbara County Action Network (SB CAN)

Santa Barbara Council of Research and Education (SB CORE)

Here on the Central Coast among the rolling hills, oak trees, vineyards and strawberry fields, we live in one of the most spectacularly beautiful and bountiful regions in the world. Please join us in celebrating the bounty of the fall harvest--local produce and H.O.T. Harvest Heroes--on October 26th at El Capitan Ranch on the magnificent GaviotaCoast.

High on a hillside overlooking the coast, a team of culinary wizards led by chef Adam Newman will treat us to a smorgasbord of harvest delights, all prepared with fresh local produce from Santa Barbara County farms. Bring the family and enjoy a hayride and toe-tapping blue-grass music, along with live and silent auctions.

At this event we'll be honoring our 2008 "H.O.T. Harvest Heroes"--individuals and organizations making a welcome difference through their efforts in the areas of Housing, Open space and Transportation:

-Mickey Flacks, affordable housing advocate

-The Environmental Defense Center and the Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau, Co-founders of the SantaBarbara County Ag Futures Alliance

-Marc Chytilo, Attorney, alternative transportation advocate

The importance of creating sustainable communities is the theme of a "Fall Harvest Picnic." Keynote speaker James C. Murphy, Ph.D., will explain why sustainability today is no longer merely an option, but an obligation. Dr. Murphy is a highly-regarded expert who has worked globally on the front-end of this evolving field, most recently with the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the world's leading think tank for international affairs, where he was responsible for a new initiative in climate change and energy security.

Tickets to this one-of-a-kind celebration are $100 per adult, children half-price. For more information about purchasing tickets, reserving tables, buying ads for our tribute book, or to receive a sponsorship form, please contact Olivia at Olivia@sbcan.org or 879-1768
