Annual Membership Meeting

SB CAN is a membership-based organization that draws its strength from the active participation and support of people throughout the county who share our mission.  We hold annual membership meetings to elect our board members who represent various regions across the county and a wide range of environmental and social justice interests.

2007 Membership Meetings, July 18 and 22

In 2007 SB CAN held two membership meetings, one in Santa Barbara, and one in Santa Maria. Members across the county joined us to find out more about what SB CAN is doing, offer feedback, and elect new board members.  They also had the chance to hear from two very special speakers who shared their unique observations on the local political scene.

Santa Barbara Meeting

Wednesday, July 18, 2007, 5:30-7:30 PM, Karpeles Library, 21 W Anapamu St.

FEATURING: Harvey Molotch, founding SB CAN member, speaking on “Santa Barbara as the Hinge of History.” Those of you who know Harvey know what a great speaker he is - smart, funny, surprising, clever and a perfect mix of informative, thought provoking and entertaining - not an easy feat. If you've never heard him speak, you're in for a treat.

Harvey Molotch is a professor of sociology and metropolitan studies at New York University, where he conducts research on issues of city growth and urban security as well as on product design and development. He is the author of Where Stuff Comes From, and four other books including: How Local Controls Shape Community, Environments and Economies; Urban Fortunes: The Political Economy of Place; and The Effects of Urban Growth: A Population Impact Analysis. He has written several hundred articles, chapters and reviews. Before joining the faculty at NYU, Harvey was the Chair of Sociology and professor at UCSB, as well as a Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics, a visiting professor at Northwestern University, University of Essex, Lund University, and SUNY Stony Brook.

He is widely cited by planners for his article, "The City as a Growth Machine: Toward a Political Economy of Place.”

Santa Maria Meeting

Sunday, July 22, 2007, 2-4 PM, D.W.'s American Bistro, 2646 Santa Maria Way #106 (across from United Rentals)

FEATURING: Hilda Zacarias, SB CAN founding member and Boardmember, and newest Santa Maria City Council Member, speaking on “From Activism to Action.”

In 2006 Hilda was elected as the first progressive, and the second woman, ever, to sit on the Santa Maria City Council. She unseated popular Marty Mariscal, who some say had been hand-picked by the conservative power base to succeed Lavagnino as Mayor. She’s has been shaking things up on the conservative Council ever since, helping to give the disenfranchised a voice, and the “good ol’ boys” have been pushing back.

Hilda grew up in Santa Maria and graduated from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She recently completed her Masters Degree in Public Administration at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hilda owned and operated an accounting and tax firm for 12 years in Santa Maria as well as worked as an auditor of non-profits for a Santa Barbara based CPA firm. She taught taxation and accounting at Cal Poly. She has been involved with organizations such as Boys & Girls Club, Noontime Kiwanis, National Conference of Communities & Justice, Future Leaders of America, and Women’s Economic Venture.
