“SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY NOW” (SUN) COALITION
SUN COALITION CELEBRATES COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN
RESPONDING TO UCSB’S LONG RANGE DEVELOPMENT PLAN
SUN is the product of a series of meetings convened by the Santa Barbara County Action Network to discuss community challenges raised by UCSB’s Draft Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). SUN members are committed to encouraging wide community participation in reviewing and responding to the University’s plan to add over 10,000 new residents on the South Coast.
Acknowledging what a great asset UCSB is to Santa Barbara County, SUN members emphasize that they do not seek to oppose the University’s future development, but rather to improve it. The coalition seeks a collaborative, positive relationship with UCSB. SUN’s statement of principles stresses the importance of careful planning: “Decisions made by and about the University will have far reaching and long lasting consequences for residents of the campus, Isla Vista, the Cities of Santa Barbara and Goleta and throughout Santa Barbara County.”
Recently SUN submitted comments to UCSB’s LRDP Re-circulated Draft Environmental Impact Report (RDEIR), which can be read at the link below, along with comments submitted by other coalition partners.
The next steps are for UCSB to respond to public comments to its RDEIR and possibly re-circulate the DEIR. USCB expects to bring its proposed LRDP to University of California Regents as early as this summer. Eventually, UCSB will also need the approval of the California Coastal Commission.
This page will serve as a central station for information about the UCSB LRDP and responses to it. Stay tuned to for more updates.
