Previously we have reported to you on this proposal to restart oil production in the hills above Lompoc and to truck crude oil 165 miles to Coalinga.
Earlier, the County denied ExxonMobil’s proposal to truck offshore oil from Gaviota to Kern County on the basis of it being dangerous.
This proposal is just as dangerous, yet the County Planning Commission is seriously considering approving it. There is a hearing this Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Santa Maria at which the applicant is seeking a continuance. We will be there arguing for the Commission to deny the project. The item is likely to come up at 11 a.m.
Click here for the letter and photos we have submitted to the Planning Commission.

Santa Maria Riverkeepers
a new group SBCAN is forming to protect and enhance the Santa Maria River.
We will work on habitat restoration, water quality improvements, solutions to flooding, enhanced public access and advocating for policies that benefit the Santa Maria River watershed.
This winter we will be planting native plants and restoring habitat in several areas where encampments had been located in the Santa Maria riverbed near Magellan and Seaward Drives in Santa Maria.
We are doing this work in partnership with Channel Islands Restoration and the County of Santa Barbara. We need volunteers to help us.
We hope you will join us.
We are hoping to do our first planting in late January.
