Santa Barbara County Action Network Roundtable

Friday, November 7
Noon-1:30 p.m.
Via Zoom
Register here

The November South Coast SBCAN Roundtable features a presentation by Kelly McAdoo, recently appointed Santa Barbara city administrator. We've asked her to present an overview of the proposal to transform Paseo Nuevo with a large-scale housing development.

The terms of the plan include significant concessions to Paseo Nuevo leaseholders. These terms, and the fate of affordable housing, are among questions being raised by city planning commissioners, some members of the city council and the city housing authority. The roundtable hopefully is a chance to understand the debate, which is important to the city's future. It's also a chance to meet Ms. McAdoo.

Agenda
  1. Welcome by SBCAN Co-President Dick Flacks
  2. Santa Barbara City Administrator Kelly McAdoo discusses the city staff proposal for housing development at Paseo Nuevo and responds to community questions
  3. Updates from participants

MESSAGE FROM ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE CENTER

EDC represents SBCAN and other groups in our effort
to protect our county from another oil spill

On November 4, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will decide whether to transfer Exxon’s oil and gas permits to Sable Offshore Corp.—the Texas company threatening our coast and communities with the restart of three aging offshore platforms, two onshore processing facilities, and the same pipeline that failed 10 years ago causing the devastating oil spill on the Gaviota Coast.

In September, a federal judge rejected Sable’s attempt to force an immediate transfer of permits for these oil facilities. That’s a big win for our community and our coast. But the fight isn’t over. The court ordered the Board to hold a new public hearing on whether to transfer the permits.

The Board will once again consider whether Sable has the skills, training, and financial resources to operate safely and responsibly. This is not a simple paperwork issue—it’s a major decision about our County’s future. EDC and our partners will urge the Supervisors to deny the transfer of these permits. Sable has continuously shown disregard for the law, ignoring multiple cease-and-desist orders from the California Coastal Commission and digging up sensitive habitats without permits. Sable’s work in Santa Barbara County has resulted in a record $18 million fine from the Coastal Commission, a state Attorney General lawsuit accusing Sable of illegally discharging waste into streams and habitats, and 21 criminal charges filed against the company by the District Attorney, including five felonies. The company has proven to our community time and time again it cannot be trusted to operate these facilities safely or responsibly.

WILL YOU JOIN US TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4TH?

We need every voice. Every student, every parent, every surfer, every fisher, every person who loves this place. Let’s fill that hearing room.

IN PERSON: Testify in person at the hearing on Tuesday, November 4, 9AM at the County of Santa Barbara, 105 E. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara
RALLY: 8:00AM (Wear Red!)
DOORS OPEN: 7:00AM

VIRTUALLY: Testify virtually by Zoom - REGISTRATION REQUIRED
(Link to be released with agenda here)

EMAIL COMMENTS: by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 3 to [email protected]

The Board has every right—and responsibility—to ask hard questions and require Sable to provide more information. Sable’s record makes clear this company is either unwilling or unable to follow the law and operate safely.

On November 4 the Board can—and must— deny the transfer of these permits. But they need to hear from us.

Let’s protect the places we love—together.

Thank you.

Tara Rengifo
Senior Attorney

Musical Showman Gale McNeeley Presents
Tom Lehrer Tribute Show

Sunday, November 9
2pm-3pm

Home of Jeanne Sparks and Ken Hough, Orcutt
RSVP to [email protected] for address

Tom Lehrer left the planet July 26th, but his inspired music and lyrics live on.

In the 50s and 60s, Tom was a hit on college campuses with outrageous songs like Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, The Vatican Rag and So Long Mom, I’m Off to Drop the Bomb. He pushed the envelope with his take on religion, politics and war, taking jabs at the Boy Scouts, the Marines and Wernher von Braun.

Gale McNeeley’s Irish tenor vocals and wide musical and performance range make Lehrer’s satirical lyrics shine. And his performance background of unique material makes him ideal for bringing out the best of Lehrer’s work.

A former Broadway singer-actor, he’s a European trained instructor of Commedia Dell ‘Arte (Italian masked comedy) teaching nationally. Work like his ongoing touring show Archy and Mehitabel, allows for a rich interpretation of Lehrer zany words ands music. McNeeley says, “At my Jesuit college, The Vatican Rag was the naughtiest song I had ever heard. Tom inspired my career as a song parodist.”

Mr. McNeeley will be accompanied on the piano by Paul Marszalkowski from the Pacific Conservatory Theatre. There will be a suggested donation of $15 at the door. For more information text or call 805 406 4997.

NO KINGS ALLIANCE

No_Kings_Rapid_Response.png
Mass_Mutual_Aid.png

MESSAGE FROM NO KINGS ALLIANCE

Mass Mutual Aid

There will be more mass protests in our future, but before that, there will be authoritarian overreach to defend against…and quickly. What we do will change week to week. Whatever the moment requires, we’ll adapt. Because authoritarianism doesn’t stand alone — it survives on silence, complicity, and cash flow. The No Kings Alliance is simple: make it impossible for anyone — in power, in profit, or in denial — to quietly capitulate.

THIS WEEK'S ACTION:
  • Donate to your local food bank
  • Support your local community shelter
  • Host a local give-back drive

MESSAGES FROM INDIVISIBLE (NATIONAL)

Our Demands for Spotify

Until our demands are met, we will withhold our subscriptions and our support. We are calling on Spotify founder and current CEO Daniel Ek, as well as Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström who will become the new co-CEOs starting in January 2026, to:

  • Immediately terminate all ICE and DHS advertising contracts with Spotify.
  • Spotify must update its Advertising Policy to prohibit government propaganda and hate-based recruitment campaigns.
  • Spotify must commit to defending civil rights and standing up for communities under threat from authoritarian actions.

What You Can do

We are asking every listener and artist to take three key actions:

  1. Cancel your Spotify subscription, TODAY until the ICE ads are removed.
  2. Engage in peaceful, public protest outside of Spotify offices, studios, or major events to demand they stop their ICE recruitment ads.*
    • Bring your community together to make your voices heard, peacefully and powerfully.
    • Use your signs, stories, and creativity to demand that Spotify drop ICE ads and stand on the right side of history.
    • Share photos and videos from your protest on social media and tag Spotify on their social media accounts.
    • Use hashtags: #CancelSpotify #DontStreamFascism #StopICEAds
  3. Tag Spotify publicly and urge artists, podcasters, and labels to denounce these ads and oppose the platform complicity.

How to cancel Spotify Premium

We've included instructions on how to cancel Spotify via website, iOS app, Android, or if the service is bundled with a mobile/internet provider.

Help Promote Eastside Santa Barbara's Businesses & Resources

Last year, Eastside residents approached SBCAN for help to promote Eastside businesses and resources. Residents consider Milpas Street Santa Barbara's "second State Street," but do not feel like there is enough investment in the Eastside to help boost its economy. Long-standing businesses are struggling due to various factors including lack of visitation from tourists staying on Cabrillo and from locals.

Thank you to our volunteer Abigail Lindros for helping create this petition to urge the City of Santa Barbara to help promote social and economic justice in Santa Barbara's Eastside. The Eastside is a community rich with diversity and resources and should be treated as such.

"To revitalize the Eastside, a community of Eastside residents alongside SBCAN and other organizations, propose creating a dedicated Eastside Resources/Businesses page on the official City of Santa Barbara website. This page would include hyperlinks to local business websites and contact information, enhancing visibility and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. Additionally, this page would promote Eastside resources such as libraries, community centers, and services for families to bolster community resilience and increase use of existing services.

To elevate Eastside’s online presence, we call for the hiring of City staff or the designation of funds towards a local nonprofit to manage social media accounts that uplift our Milpas restaurants to attract more visitors and invigorate our community’s economy."

Please sign this petition to urge the City of Santa Barbara to create an Eastside businesses and resources tab on the official City website and designate funds to promoting Milpas restaurants on social media.

What's the Plan?
Every Thursday at noon
Online

The onslaught of news, the chaos coming out of the White House – it’s all meant to overwhelm us. It’s a deliberate strategy to sow confusion and make us believe we are powerless to fight back.

The antidote: Coming together in community to process what’s happening, to sift through what’s important and what’s just noise, and coalesce around strategies for fighting back.

Join Indivisible co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin each week, as we carve out an hour to discuss what’s happening and – more importantly – what’s the plan.
