A Convergence of Troubadours

November 19 marks the 110th anniversary of Joe Hill's execution by a Utah firing squad. Joe helped create the culture of protest with the songs he wrote for Wobblies that still inspire workers' struggle, so I usually do a Joe Hill episode in November. And I noticed that, coincidentally, this month, several other socially conscious troubadours demanded attention.
 
This week's episode is a sort of harmonic troubadour convergence that includes Woody Guthrie on the 50th anniversary of Franco's death; Todd Snider, who tragically died this week; Nebraska "political' songs the Springsteen movie neglected; Bad Bunny's conscious album won Latin Grammies; Patti Smith's great people power anthem (her debut album was released 50 years ago)--and a really good No Kings anthem that Joe Hill could have written.

Transgender Day of Remembrance
De La Guerra Plaza, Santa Barbara 
November 22 at 2:00 p.m.

The Santa Barbara Transgender Advocacy Network (SBTAN) invites the community to come together in solidarity for Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on Saturday, November 22 at 2:00 p.m. at De La Guerra Plaza in downtown Santa Barbara. 

Participants will gather at the plaza and then march down State Street carrying signs bearing the names of transgender individuals lost to violence this year. This annual observance honors their memory and calls attention to the urgent need for equality, safety, and dignity for all transgender people. 

“Transgender Awareness Week and TDOR are a time for trans people to share experiences, educate, and advocate for their rights,” said Michal, organizer with Women’s March Santa Barbara. “This is more important than ever as attacks on the trans community — and the organizations that support them — continue to rise across the country.” 

Community members are encouraged to RSVP at https://sbtan.org/march to help organizers plan sign-making and ensure the greatest possible impact.

Our Demands for Spotify

Until our demands are met, we will withhold our subscriptions and our support. We are calling on Spotify founder and current CEO Daniel Ek, as well as Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström who will become the new co-CEOs starting in January 2026, to:

  • Immediately terminate all ICE and DHS advertising contracts with Spotify.
  • Spotify must update its Advertising Policy to prohibit government propaganda and hate-based recruitment campaigns.
  • Spotify must commit to defending civil rights and standing up for communities under threat from authoritarian actions.

What You Can do

We are asking every listener and artist to take three key actions:

  1. Cancel your Spotify subscription, TODAY until the ICE ads are removed.
  2. Engage in peaceful, public protest outside of Spotify offices, studios, or major events to demand they stop their ICE recruitment ads.*
    • Bring your community together to make your voices heard, peacefully and powerfully.
    • Use your signs, stories, and creativity to demand that Spotify drop ICE ads and stand on the right side of history.
    • Share photos and videos from your protest on social media and tag Spotify on their social media accounts.
    • Use hashtags: #CancelSpotify #DontStreamFascism #StopICEAds
  3. Tag Spotify publicly and urge artists, podcasters, and labels to denounce these ads and oppose the platform complicity.

Help Promote Eastside Santa Barbara's Businesses & Resources

   

Last year, Eastside residents approached SBCAN for help to promote Eastside businesses and resources. Residents consider Milpas Street Santa Barbara's "second State Street," but do not feel like there is enough investment in the Eastside to help boost its economy. Long-standing businesses are struggling due to various factors including lack of visitation from tourists staying on Cabrillo and from locals. 

Thank you to our volunteer Abigail Lindros for helping create this petition to urge the City of Santa Barbara to help promote social and economic justice in Santa Barbara's Eastside. The Eastside is a community rich with diversity and resources and should be treated as such.

"To revitalize the Eastside, a community of Eastside residents alongside SBCAN and other organizations, propose creating a dedicated Eastside Resources/Businesses page on the official City of Santa Barbara website. This page would include hyperlinks to local business websites and contact information, enhancing visibility and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. Additionally, this page would promote Eastside resources such as libraries, community centers, and services for families to bolster community resilience and increase use of existing services.  

To elevate Eastside’s online presence, we call for the hiring of City staff or the designation of funds towards a local nonprofit to manage social media accounts that uplift our Milpas restaurants to attract more visitors and invigorate our community’s economy."

COUNTY RIDING AND HIKING TRAILS ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The County Riding and Hiking Trails Advisory Committee (CRAHTAC) has at one or more vacancy in each of its five supervisorial districts. It needs more community members to represent the needs of the public. SBCAN encourages you to apply to be on the committee.
 
CRAHTAC was established by the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors in an advisory capacity to review programs, policies, and procedures affecting county recreational riding and hiking trails and their use. Committee members are concerned with the location, development, and maintenance of the recreational trails system countywide, to provide public access and links to the Los Padres National Forest, parks, beaches, and other public recreation areas.
 
The committee is comprised of a maximum of four members from each of the five Supervisorial Districts and serves at the pleasure of the appointing Supervisor. CRAHTAC meets regularly on a bimonthly schedule.
