Message from the City of Santa Maria:
Draft General Plan and Environmental Impact Report
Available for Public Review
The Draft General Plan and Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) are available for public review and comment from Thursday, August 14th, to Sunday, September 28th, 2025.
WHAT’S BEING PLANNED: The Community Development Department is preparing a comprehensive update to the City’s General Plan. The nine individual Elements, or chapters of the City’s Draft General Plan include goals, policies, and implementation activities that serve as the master plan for Santa Maria’s growth for the next 25-30 years. The Draft EIR analyzes the potential environmental impacts of the growth contemplated by Draft General Plan.
WHERE YOU COME IN: The public review period will be an opportunity to review the Draft General Plan and the EIR and to provide your feedback to the City. Each of the General Plan Elements, the Draft EIR document, as well as a form for providing feedback, are available at the project website: http://www.imaginesantamaria.com/draft-general-plan
You may learn more and provide feedback on the Draft General Plan and EIR at Planning Commission Study Sessions at Shepard Hall in the Santa Maria Public Library, 421 S McClelland Street on Thursday, September 4th and September 18th, at 1:30 p.m.
Comments may also be submitted within the public review period to Dana Eady, Planning Division Manager, by email at [email protected], or mailed/delivered to the City of Santa Maria Community Development Department (110 South Pine Street, Room 101, Santa Maria, CA 93458). Message fromCAUSE:
As you may know, MICOP and CAUSE have been leading a campaign as Alianza Campesina to win a living wage for farmworkers in Santa Barbara County. In the face of rising living costs and increased immigration raids, farmworkers need our solidarity now more than ever. While summer brings visitors from across the state to enjoy wines crafted from the back-breaking labor of farmworkers, the workers themselves are still fighting for the dignity of a fair wage.
We invite you to join us for the Alianza Campesina Winery March in Los Olivos to stand in solidarity with farmworkers and demand the respect they deserve.
📍 Location: Saint Mark's Episcopal Church
📅 Date & Time: Saturday, August. 30th | 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
📌 Address: 2901 Nojoqui Ave, Los Olivos, CA
Will you stand with us? Your presence sends a powerful message: farmworkers deserve a living wage and dignity on the job.
You can find the English and Spanish event flyer attached below. If you have any questions feel free to respond to this email or contact me at 805-868-4882. Let’s come together to highlight the people behind each bottle and raise our voices for justice in the fields. See you there!

Next System Convergence II
September 4-5
Online
Many of you attended SBCAN’s July 11 Roundtable “Building the Next System: Here and Now” with nationally-known speakers who are working to build a better world. If not, you can view the video here.
The speakers talked about a new system that could be brought about by grassroots efforts.
As explained on the Next System website:
“If we face our social, political, economic, and ecological crises with the urgency they demand, we can create a world that is truly democratic, sustainable, and just.
“The Next System Teach-Ins will bring us together — on college campuses, in neighborhood centers, union halls, and public spaces — united in the work of building a system that sustains the future we all deserve.”
Towards the goal of conducting Teach-Ins in November, a Next System Convergence will be held online on September 4 and 5:
“offering another opportunity to connect, collaborate, and prepare for impactful Teach-Ins. These gatherings aim to:
- Build solidarity, excitement, and momentum among individuals, networks, and organizations involved in the Next System Teach-In process;
- Prepare the way for the emergence of Next System Studies on university and college campuses everywhere;
- Build ties within and among campuses and local communities;
Want to take part? Explore how you can host a Teach-In or join us this fall.”
