Message from Green Team Garden Director Leo Espinoza:
Good moment sisters and brothers, for those of you who don't know me my name is Leonardo Espinoza Jr. and I am your new Central Coast Green Team Garden Director.

Since returning home I've set myself on becoming a champion of Youth and Young Adults for our area, such as being the youngest on our All-America Committee and alumni to many county orgs. I share this with you because The Garden helped make it all possible.

We all know the drought situation California is in and each and everyone of us can play a part in empowering ourselves. Have you heard of grow food, not lawns? Have you heard that gardening is the new skateboarding. If you're interested in learning a few tips, starting your own edible garden or have one and would like free starter plants to take home, then come on out to our Garden Workshop on Sunday.

We're the generation that will evolve, reconnect with our food and pass it on to our children.

Call Leo Espinoza at 805.349.1969 for more information.

2. County Board of Supervisors to Consider Phillips 66 Rail Spur, September 1, afternoon session
County Administration Building, 105 E. Anapamu St., Fourth Floor, Santa Barbara.
(Remote testimony, 511 E. Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria.)

The last item on the September 1 Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors' meeting is consideration of sending a letter to San Luis Obispo County's Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors asking them to deny the rail spur project. The cities of Carpinteria, Goleta and Santa Barbara have done this already. Let's turn out and encourage our county board to follow suit.

Here are the links to the letter we submitted, as well as the links to our report and detailed map, which we distributed in an earlier Action Alert:

Letter: SBCAN letter
Report: "Impacts and Risks from Oil Trains and the Phillips 66 Rail Spur Project"

3. Goleta City Council to Consider Contributing to the Feasibility Study for Community Choice Energy, September 1, 1:30 PM

The following information was provided by Jefferson Litton of the Community Environmental Council:

Participation in Community Choice Feasibility Study Before Goleta City Council This Tuesday

This Tuesday, September 1st at 1:30 pm, the Goleta City Council will consider participation in the feasibility study and a $15,000 cost share request from SB County.  We will need supporters to speak at this meeting as one of the key Councilmembers who supports CCE will be absent.

City Staff has recommended that the Council participate and approve the funding, which is great news.  However as  I mentioned, we still need the Council to hear our support.  The City’s staff report is attached and the agenda can be found below in the email below.   Community Choice is the first agenda item after a brief consent calendar so it should be heard close to 1:30 pm.

Goleta City Hall is located off the Los Carneros Exit at 130 Cremona Drive, Suite B, Goleta, CA

If you can’t attend the meeting, you can write to the Council at:

Paula Perrotte (Mayor) -            [email protected]

Jim Farr -                                     [email protected]

Michael Bennett –                     [email protected]

Roger Aceves –                           [email protected]

Tony Vallejo -                             [email protected]

Deborah Lopez (City Clerk)        [email protected]

Unfortunately, I will be out of town for hearing but April Price will be attending and speaking on behalf of CEC.

Thanks to all of you for supporting Community Choice!

Best,

Jefferson also provided the excellent news that Ventura County voted to contribute $50,000 to the Feasibility Study.
