Hi everyone!

Tuesday, August 27, at 10:00 a.m., the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will meet in the Santa Maria Board Room (Joseph Centeno Betteravia Government Administration Building, 511 Lakeside Pkwy, Santa Maria).

Alianza Campesina will be there in person to request for the submission of our report “Harvesting Dignity: The Case for a Living Wage for Farmworkers,” into public records and to urge for the discussion of a living wage for farmworkers to be agendized in the next Supervisors meeting in Santa Maria that will take place on September 17th, 2024.

Workers plan to give testimonies to the board requesting they take action to improve wages for farmworkers. We would like to invite y'all to attend in support and also give public comment in favor of this desperately needed discussion.

Alianza Campesina calls upon our allies to support in one or all of the following:

Ways to support:

  1. Show Solidarity! Attend the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors Hearing on Tuesday, August 27th, at 10:00 a.m., at the Santa Maria Board Room ( 511 Lakeside Pkwy, Santa Maria, CA 93455). Show your support by holding a sign, bringing your own sign, and being present!

  2. Email or Give Your Public Comment: We’re asking our allies, that’s you! to either show up or email your public comment to advocate for all farmworkers in Santa Barbara County and ask the board to place this issue as an item on the agenda. We are attaching a talking points document to serve as guidance!

  3. "Please show your support by signing on to our petition!": and share it with your network! ¡Campesinos Unidos Por $26!

Questions? Please contact CAUSE Policy Associate Erica Diaz at [email protected] or MICOP Policy Director Vanessa Teran at [email protected].

Thank you all for your patience and continued support for farmworkers! We hope to see you on Tuesday!
Best,

Join us at the Board of Supervisors meeting on August 27 and give comment during Agenda Item #2 on the Climate Action Plan

On Tuesday, August 27, the County Board of Supervisors will be discussing actions to help meet goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030.

SBCAN and dozens of other organizations are urging the County to include emissions from gas and oil facilities in the Greenhouse Gases inventory in the Climate Action Plan

Learn more about the 2030 Climate Action Plan and how you can use your voice to promote environmental justice in our County.

Read the letter written by the Sierra Club and co-signed by SBCAN here.

See talking points written by the Sierra Club here:

  • Ventura and Los Angeles count oil industry pollution. Santa Barbara does not.
  • A single oil operation could erase the work done to reduce carbon pollution by all the rest of us; their pollution wouldn't even be counted.
  • To comply with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the county must tally all pollution from all activities — not pick and choose and pretend that pollution is less than it really is.
  • Climate action is urgent. July was California's hottest month ever. Our county is vulnerable to extreme heat, wildfires, drought, sea level rise, and other impacts.
  • Reducing pollution from burning fossil fuels will also save lives lost to air pollution that contributes to asthma, respiratory illness, heart disease, and cancer.
