Friend,
These are undeniably challenging times. Many of us are mourning, processing, and grappling with the very real threats looming in the months ahead. From the wildfire ravaging our community to the devastation in Gaza, and the re-election of Trump – it’s hard to escape the weight of the world right now. It’s okay to sit with that grief, but it’s also key that we look ahead and prepare for the work we must do together in this precious moment.
We know that true change begins with the power of our communities. That’s why we organize. The road ahead will be difficult, but we draw strength from our ancestors who faced their struggles with resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment. Their strength is our foundation, and it will guide us as we continue the fight for justice and liberation.
Now is the moment to unite our power. We can build on our past victories, defend our communities, and advance our vision for a Central Coast where everyone, without exception, can thrive. While hatred and fear grips our nation, we can take action locally to live our values and uplift our people. Together, we can create a region where everyone — not just the wealthy — has the freedom and opportunity to succeed.
The future of the Central Coast belongs to us, no matter the outcome of any election. And right now, we have a chance to reignite our collective fight. Farmworkers in our region do some of the most dangerous and deadly jobs in the nation, yet corporations like Driscoll’s make billions while farmworkers are not paid enough to afford rent, groceries, and medical bills. Farmworkers, who are essential to the health of our communities, are demanding dignified wages and better working conditions. It’s time we stand with them in their fight for a living wage.
On Tuesday, November 12th at 3:00PM, the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will meet in the Santa Maria Board Room at the Joseph Centeno Betteravia Government Administration Building (511 Lakeside Parkway, Santa Maria). The meeting will include a panel discussion from 3:00 – 4:30 PM, followed by testimonies from farmworkers and allies from 4:30 – 7:30PM, urging the board to take action to improve farmworkers' wages. We will also hold a rally outside to stand in solidarity with our farmworkers – will you attend to show your support for a living wage for agricultural workers?
Even in the face of national turmoil, we remain committed to organizing for a Central Coast where everyone has access to fair wages, affordable housing, quality education, and safety. Let’s come together and push the Board of Supervisors to pass a $26/hour minimum wage ordinance for farmworkers in Santa Barbara County.
Adelante,
Lucas Zucker & Hazel Davalos Co-Executive Directors CAUSE
