November 15th is America Recycles Day!

Keep our recycling stream clean by only adding these items to your recycling container:

  • Glass bottles & jars
  • Metal cans, clean aluminum foil, & other solid metal objects
  • Mixed paper, magazines, newspapers, & non-greasy cardboard
  • Plastic bottles & large containers that held a liquid with a #1 or #2 recycling symbol
  • Rigid plastic containers with a #5 symbol, sized one-gallon or larger

Hazardous materials and electronics should never go into your blue bin. These can leach chemicals into the environment or even start a fire!

Have more questions about recycling and other items not on this list? Visit the County’s ultimate waste reduction resource: LessIsMore.org

Compost Your Pumpkins (& other organics)!

Turn your old Halloween pumpkins into a nutrient-rich soil amendment by composting them at home. Santa Barbara County sells compost bins at wholesale prices at three locations:

  • South Coast Recycling and Transfer Station at 4430 Calle Real in Santa Barbara
  • North County Public Works Building at 620 West Foster Road in Orcutt
  • Santa Ynez Valley Recycling and Transfer Station at 4004 Foxen Canyon Road in Los Olivos

Learn more about discounted compost bins here.

Residents in the ReSource Center wastershed (South Coast and Santa Ynez Valley) who don’t have a home composting system can place their pumpkins in the trash. The pumpkins will be sorted out at the ReSource Center’s MRF and composted at the anaerobic digestion facility. Please cut pumpkins before putting them in the trash – smaller pieces are more likely to be composted. And please do NOT put pumpkins in your green waste container.

Residents of the Santa Maria and Lompoc Valleys who don’t have a home composting system should place their pumpkins in their green waste container. The pumpkins will be composted locally at a facility in Santa Maria.

Make sure to remove any candles, lights, or other festive accessories from your pumpkin before composting.

Join us to celebrate these distinguished leaders!

We'd like to invite you to join

Santa Maria Riverkeepers

a new group SBCAN is forming to protect and enhance the Santa Maria River.

SMR_9130018-799px.jpg

We will work on habitat restoration, water quality improvements, solutions to flooding, enhanced public access and advocating for policies that benefit the Santa Maria River watershed.

Starting Nov. 23, we will be planting native plants and restoring habitat in several areas where encampments had been located in the Santa Maria riverbed near Magellan and Seaward Drives in Santa Maria.

We are doing this work in partnership with Channel Islands Restoration and the County of Santa Barbara. We need volunteers to help us.

SMR-IMG_1261.jpg

We hope you will join us.

We have an online informational meeting scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 19 from 7pm to 8pm to give an overview of what the Riverkeepers can do and to get your input on what you'd like the group to do.

We have three planting days scheduled:

  • Saturday, Nov. 23 from 8:30am-1pm
  • Saturday, Dec. 14 from 8:30am-1pm
  • Saturday, Jan. 4 from 8:30am-1pm

If you are interested in joining us, please sign up at https://forms.gle/n9wj4NiTNTF1fE427

(If you have already signed up, you do not need to sign up again.)

Please share this information with members of your organization or anyone you know who might be interested.

Nos gustaría invitarlo a unirse

Santa Maria Riverkeepers
