Hi Friend --

Here's a message from Emily Allen, SBCAN board member and director of Homeless and Veterans Impact Initiatives, Home For Good SBC:

On the 10th of October, people around the world will mark World Homeless Day in many varied ways in order to bring about awareness and change for those experiencing homelessness in their local community. The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors will recognize this Day the Tuesday prior to the event.

In Santa Barbara, the film “Us & Them” will be screened with a panel discussion of individuals with lived experience to follow. We think this special event has the potential to engage new people in this fight for long term solutions to our housing and homelessness crisis.

Filmed over a decade, “Us and Them” is a deeply visceral film about transformation through human connection. It begins when filmmaker Krista Loughton is questioned by addiction expert Dr. Gabor Maté about her need to relieve pain in the world. This takes her back in time, when she befriended four chronically homeless people in an effort to help them heal their lives. These four charismatic people reveal the heartrending realities of their lives. The severe challenges of life on the street are portrayed with an unapologetic openness, in both emotive and humorous ways. All are struggling with addiction issues rooted in their painful childhood histories. Krista finds a mentor in Reverend Allen Tysick, a street minister who dedicated his life to serving the most vulnerable.  Watching him build a new facility for the street community inspires Krista to create change in her own way.

United Way is a community of donors, advocates, volunteers, and partners who fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community. Home For Good Santa Barbara County supports a Coordinated Entry System, a no-wrong door, countywide system that engages and connects individuals and families experiencing homelessness to the optimal resources for their needs. We believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home for good.

Thank you for your consideration!
