Housing Advocacy

Santa Barbara County Action Network works in coalition with allied organizations to promote development of affordable housing and protection and justice for tenants.

SBCAN lobbied for establishment of the Affordable Housing Trust Fund for the City of Santa Barbara and to create an adequate revenue stream for the fund, including a portion of the sales tax increase voters approved in November 2024.

We're working to counter the growing use of 'renoviction' by corporate owners of rental housing which is replacing working tenants with more profitable student and short-term rentals.

Countywide the coalition will be supporting public funding for affordable housing and use of publicly-owned land for affordable housing.

SBCAN initiated the Sustainable University Now (SUN) Coalition, which is pressing UCSB to fulfill long delayed plans for large-scale employee housing. SUN is suing UCSB for failing to respond to requests for documents pertinent to its housing plans, including the failed Munger dormitory project.
