SBCAN: Women’s Equality Day Car Cruise Wed. in SM

Suffrage_Flyer.jpg

The Santa Maria Women’s Suffrage Centennial Celebration Collaborative, an informal group composed of women from several different community organizations, will commemorate Women’s Equality Day with a Car Cruise from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 26 in Santa Maria.

Participants will assemble in the parking lot of the Minerva Club (127 W. Boone St.) where there will be brief remarks concerning the struggle for, and the importance of, the participation of women as voters. Cynthia Thacker (Minerva Club) will address the past, Hilda Zacarias (Hancock College Trustee and former City Councilmember) the present, and Ivette Peralta (Santa Barbara County Commission for Women) the future.

After speeches, the group will present yellow roses to a special Suffrage Centennial honoree and then the Cruise will begin. Cars will travel through the carriage district first, then through City Council Districts 1 and 2, including north on Western and south on Miller.

Please, wear all white, or purple and gold, to show your solidarity with the women who struggled on our behalf more than 100 years ago. We encourage you to decorate your cars safely in purple and gold with streamers, crepe paper, or other similar materials, and tape signs (see suggestions at the end) to the sides of the vehicle.

Note: it is extremely important that ALL ATTENDEES WEAR MASKS and stay inside or beside their cars as much as possible. Please, decorate your car and create your signs PRIOR to arriving at the Minerva Club. A very limited number of pre-made signs and supplies will be available at the event on a first-come, first-served basis.

An additional goal of the event is to stimulate attention to the importance of registering to vote. Prior to the car cruise, flyers will be distributed along the route, encouraging residents to come out to support us as we drive by, to register to vote if they haven’t already, instructions on how to register, and also to remind them to complete their census information.

Collaborative organizations include the American Association of University Women – Santa Maria Branch; the Democratic Club of Santa Maria Valley; the League of Women Voters of Santa Maria Valley; the Minerva Club; the North County Rape Crisis and Child Protection Center; the Pacific Conservatory Theatre; Planned Parenthood – California Central Coast; Santa Maria-Lompoc NAACP; Santa Barbara County Action Network (SBCAN); Santa Barbara County Commission for Women; and the Women’s March–Santa Maria Valley.
