Celebrate Juneteenth
Sojourner Kincaid Rolle and Juneteenth Santa Barbara Co-Founder, Jordan Killebrew, Jon Dixon Photo

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Originating in Galveston, Texas in 1865, when Union troops informed the remaining enslaved peoples of their freedom, it is celebrated as Black Independence Day.

The community is invited to partake in events and celebrations throughout the county, including:

  • Juneteenth Santa Barbara "Joy for the People" Block Party, Saturday June 15, 11AM - 6PM — Juneteenth SB is a collaborative effort to showcase Black culture, talent, and joy in Santa Barbara County. Now in its seventh year, the event centers around a free community block party held in historically Black Santa Barbara. Enjoy live local music, dancing, poetry, spoken word, artist exhibitions, storytelling, and food, and more.

  • Juneteenth Lompoc Block Party, Saturday June 15, 11AM - 5PM  — Hosted by Santa Maria-Lompoc NAACP and C4Lompoc, this celebration features live entertainment, music and dance, marketplace vendors, drumming led by Tracy Morgan, poetry, games for children and adults, children’s storytelling, a bake-off competition, merchandise, and booths of nonprofit organizations.

In remembrance of her life and legacy, a flag honoring Sojourner Kincaid Rolle will be flown at the national capitol on Juneteenth, sponsored by Congressmen Salud Carbajal. Rolle was the recipient of the 2023 California Arts Council Legacy Artist award and Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate from 2015-2017. She is remembered for her work as a playwright, producer, poet, advocate, historian, and teacher, community leader, and author of six published books, including Free at Last: A Juneteenth Poem.
