FRIDAY, JULY 11

From Mothers for Peace:
Friday, July 11, 9am
The Cliffs Hotel
2757 Shell Beach Road
Pismo Beach
Attend the California Coastal Commission meeting in Pismo Beach!
PG&E still needs approval from the California Coastal Commission (CCC) to extend the operation of Diablo Canyon. It requires a ‘consistency certification’ and a ‘coastal development permit’. These permits expired for Unit 1 in November 2024, and Unit 2’s permits will expire in August 2025.
PG&E has been recalcitrant in completing the applications and providing sufficient information. Our ACTION request is that you show up at the July 11 meeting at 9am during public comment. In supportive numbers and multiple speakers, we will ask for a hearing on this topic. Please attend even if you do not wish to speak. People in the audience matter.
Please plan your remarks to be 2 minutes in length. If you’re unable to attend the meeting in person, you can speak via Zoom. Fill out the speaker request form.
Talking Points
In every comment, request a hearing and thorough analysis.
RISK TO PUBLIC SAFETY: A 20-year license renewal continues and exacerbates risk to the public due to potential:
- seismic events
- routine discharge of radioactive materials into our ocean water and our air
- even greater amounts of high level radioactive waste to be stored onsite
- tsunamis
MARINE LIFE:
- Over the past 40+ years the Once-Through Cooling system has resulted in substantial losses of marine life due to entrainment and impingement. The impacts on marine life for an additional 20 years must be assessed.
- The mitigation program for Once-Through Cooling was intended to be an interim program, not a plan for an additional 20 years of entrapment losses.
- The effectiveness of the mitigation projects must be analyzed.
- Thermal discharge is having adverse effects on Black Abalone, a protected species.
- Cooling towers must be required.
DEVELOPMENT: Although PG&E asserts that extending the license does not involve ‘development’, the CCC contends that the proposed extension would affect a variety of coastal uses and resources by:
- extending the time for the intake and discharge of seawater
- intake cove dredging
- new or expanded spent fuel storage facility
- installation of structural components, equipment, or infrastructure
FISHING AND RECREATION: The proposed license renewal significantly delays public access, ocean recreation opportunities, and commercial and recreational fishing due to continued public safety and security issues.

FRIDAY, JULY 16 - ONE MILLION RISING

INDIVISIBLE ACTION
One Million Rising:
Strategic Non-Cooperation to Fight Authoritarianism
Across the country, authoritarian forces are getting bolder and more dangerous. Trump and his allies are not hiding their agenda: mass deportations, rollbacks of civil rights, weaponized courts, and full-scale attacks on our democracy. We don’t have to wait until it’s too late. We can stop this. But it’ll take all of us—not just on single days of mass action, but through sustained organizing in our communities.
That’s why this summer, we’re launching One Million Rising—a national effort to train one million people in the strategic logic and practice of non-cooperation, as well as the basics of community organizing and campaign design. This is how we build people power that can’t be ignored. You’re invited to join us—and lead.
Let’s build a force bigger than fear and louder than hate. Let’s get ready. Let’s get organized. Let’s stop Trump.
Session 1: The Moment & Your Mission - July 16 Get oriented to making meaning of this moment and the role you can play in coordinated strategic action.
Session 2: How to Make it Happen - July 30 This train-the-trainer session is how we get to one million. Learn not just our strategy, but how you can train others and get them on board. You'll host your first community resistance gathering after this session.
Session 3: What Now? - August 13 You'll be onboarded to basic campaign design and learn how to implement it locally as well as get plugged into our next national campaign work. Your second community resistance gathering will move this action forward.
Sign up for all 3 sessions to get the most out of this experience. Watch it live with a friend in person, and get ready now to host your own community resistance gatherings after the second and third sessions. This is how we get to 1 million!
FRIDAY, JULY 17 - GOOD TROUBLE LIVES ON
Protest Events honoring the late Congressman John Lewis
On March 7, 1965 a young man led a group of activists on a march in support of voting rights for the black community. Marching from Montgomery to Selma Alabama they were met by law enforcement on the Edmund Pettus bridge. The young leader was John Lewis. Among other injuries he suffered a fractured skull that day. This is arguably the most dramatic and celebrated event in the career of a man dedicated to civil rights and peaceful demonstration. Thanks to the work of John Lewis and a handful of other leaders the concept of peaceful protest exists.
On July 17, 2020 Congressman John Lewis passed away. The legacy of “good trouble, necessary trouble” lives on. Sixty years have passed since Bloody Sunday. In that same spirit we participate in rallies and marches to protest an authoritarian regime. When we protest we stand on the shoulders of those that suffered violence, arrest and persecution.
