    Oil Trains & Rail Spur report and rally, CPA annual meeting, even-year elections op-ed

    1. The 2nd edition of SBCAN's report on the Impacts and Risks from Oil Trains and the Phillip 66 Rail Spur Project has been posted and and can be viewed here:  http://www.sbcan.org/issue_papers. The report helps the reader visualize the ramifications of an oil train crash along Santa Barbara's coastline or in one of its communities. It includes a call to action to oppose the proposed Phillips 66 Rail Spur Project at the refinery on the Nipomo Mesa.

    2.   SBCAN, Food & Water Watch and Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter are sponsoring a rally to oppose crude oil by rail and the Phillips 66 Rail Spur Project. This will be at 11 AM, Saturday, July 11 under the Moreton Bay Fig Tree next to the Santa Barbara Amtrak Station, 30 W. Montecito St.Click here for the media advisory.

    3.  Citizens Planning Association of Santa Barbara County, one of SBCAN's close allies, is holding its Annual Meeting Saturday, July 11 from 1 PM to 3 PM in Santa Barbara.  Information is here: 

    4. Dick Flacks and Daniel Ramirez authored an op-ed supporting even-year elections in the City of Santa Barbara as a means of furthering social justice goals.  It ran in The Independent on July 7. It is pasted below or can be viewed online at

    Are you interested in water issues in the Santa Maria Valley. If so, this meeting is for you.

    The Twitchell Management Authority will solicit input regarding The Santa Maria Valley Management Area 2014 Annual Report of Hydrogeologic Conditions, Water Requirements, Supplies and Disposition.

    The report was prepared by Luhdorff and Scalmanini Consulting Engineers, April 2015, according to the terms of the June 30, 2005 Stipulation in the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District v. City of Santa Maria, et al.

                Peoples’ Self-Help Housing develops affordable housing and community facilities for low-income households and homeownership opportunities for working families, seniors, veterans, the disabled and the homeless in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties.

    Since 1970, they have developed about 380 self-help homes in Guadalupe, Santa Maria, Tanglewood and Los Alamos, including 117 in Santa Maria for farm workers and their families and 57 units for limited-income elderly residents and developmentally disabled households; 80 units in Orcutt; and 80 in Guadalupe.

                Al Thompson has written garden columns on sustainability, encouraging the idea that gardens can be practical and artistic.

                He has interpreted Chumash uses of native plants and became the garden historian at La Purisima Mission. He encouraged exploration of wildflowers and plants along the mission trails, eventually having one of the trails named after him.

                He is a docent at the Arroyo Hondo Preserve where he leads hiking tours and explains the importance of natural habitats. His own garden is open for the sharing of ideas.

                Laura and Ron Selken volunteer with the Santa Maria Noontimers Lions where Ron has served as club president, among other positions, and Laura is serving as secretary and newsletter editor.

                They are involved with the Democratic Club of Santa Maria Valley, with Laura serving on the board and editing the monthly newsletter. They are active in their mobile-home park, assisting with various activities including the monthly news magazine.

                Laura also sits on the boards of the local Literacy Council, the North Santa Barbara County Manufactured Homeowners Team, and the AAUW and the Santa Maria Public Library. She also serves on the county Library Advisory Committee.
