  • Urge Sen Jackson to support Health Care for All in CA

As you may know, California has a new single payer health care proposal in the Legislature, SB 562 (Lara, Atkins), the Healthy California Act.

The Santa Barbara County Action Network Board of Directors is joining with a coalition of organizations seeking endorsements of the legislation. We have just sent our letter of support. We urge you to support this legislation as well, and if you are a member of a group that might also support the legislation, please ask the group to also send a letter.

The bill was passed by the Senate Health Committee on April 26. The next hearing will be with the Appropriations Committee tomorrow (May 25) and then a Senate Floor vote soon after. It must pass these votes so that it will go on to the Assembly in 2018. So time is of the essence.

Here are links to a sample letter that you can customize, the text of the 36-page bill and a fact sheet.

SBCAN North County Roundtable/North County Coalition Environmental Committee

    Thursday, May 11, 2017, 6 PM

Cornerstone Community Room, Santa Maria, CA

    AGENDA

    1. Call to Order by Janet Blevins; Introductions; Agenda Review (5 min.)
    2. Review of Santa Maria Valley Environmental Issues. The environmental committee of the Santa Maria Valley Progressives has developed a list of issues and aspects of the issues. We will review the issues with an eye toward giving input to that committee and also toward suggesting priority issues that SBCAN should address. (40 min.)

    4. Open discussion about other items of interest. All (10 min.)
    5. Suggestions for next month’s agenda (May 11).  (5 min.)

For 15 years, SBCAN has been working to protect our environment and the rights of all of our county’s residents. Now, this work is more important than ever.

Each year we recognize individuals, businesses or organizations that work selflessly to these ends during our North County “Looking Forward” Awards Dinner & Fundraiser. These awards help encourage this good work to continue. The dinner also helps raise the funds we need to keep doing our part.

Please join us in honoring outstanding community leaders by becoming a sponsor of the dinner or by placing a Greeting in our Tribute Book.

The dinner will be held on Sunday, June 11 at 5 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel, 3455 Skyway Drive, Santa Maria.

  • May Day Marches in SB now and in SM at 3:30 pm TODAY!

    This message is from CAUSE:

    Dear CAUSE friends,

As the Trump administration continues to move forward with their promised attacks on our communities, immigrants’ rights advocates have called for a national Day Without an Immigrant strike on May 1st (TODAY!)

May Day is the International Day of the Worker and Day of the Immigrant.  This May Day, we’ll be showing Trump that America wouldn’t exist without the immigrants who build our cities and homes, take care of our children and elderly, and grow and cook our food.

With 1 in 10 residents of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties an undocumented person, we all have family members, friends, coworkers, classmates, and loved ones facing the threat of Trump’s attacks on immigrants.  We are all affected by deportations that tear apart our families, schools, businesses, and neighborhoods.  We ask everyone to stand in solidarity with our immigrant communities and join us in the streets next Monday.

Santa Maria: 3:30pm at Broadway and Main
Santa Barbara: 1pm at De La Guerra Plaza
Santa Paula: 6pm at Santa Paula High School

Join us to show Trump what America really looks like without immigrants and call on our local leaders to make California a sanctuary state!

    Thanks,

    Maricela Morales
